Is Laser Vision Correction Right for You?
If you’re 18 or older, have healthy eyes, and have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription, you could be a good candidate for laser vision correction. The procedure can help correct common vision issues like:
- Nearsightedness: Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
- Farsightedness: Difficulty seeing close-up objects clearly.
- Astigmatism: Blurred vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
PRK is like gently resurfacing your eye to smooth out imperfections causing blurry vision. The procedure removes a thin surface layer. Then, a laser reshapes the tissue underneath to correct your vision.
After PRK, you may experience mild discomfort and blurry vision for a few days, with a feeling similar to a mildly scratchy eye. Healing is usually quick—you’ll wear clear bandage contact lenses, your eyes will be covered by protective shields, and use eye drops to aid recovery.
PRK can offer excellent long-term results for many people, including those with eye conditions that might make LASIK less suitable.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK creates a flap in the outer layer of your eye to access the area needing correction. The flap is carefully lifted, and a laser reshapes the underlying tissue to improve vision. The flap is then placed back in position.
LASIK generally has a faster recovery time than PRK. Initially, you might experience some mild discomfort and blurry vision, but most people see significant improvement in their vision within 1–2 days.
LASIK has a proven track record of providing long-term vision correction for many people. Find out if you could be a candidate.
