Is Laser Vision Correction Right for You?
If you’re 18 or older, have healthy eyes, and have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription, you could be a good candidate for laser vision correction. The procedure can help correct common vision issues like:
- Nearsightedness: Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
- Farsightedness: Difficulty seeing close-up objects clearly.
- Astigmatism: Blurred vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK corrects vision by creating a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea. This flap is gently lifted, allowing a laser to reshape the underlying tissue to improve vision. The flap is then repositioned, where it naturally reconnects to the eye as it heals.
LASIK is known for its rapid visual recovery. Most patients experience only mild discomfort and notice significant improvement in their vision within 1–2 days after the procedure.
With a long history of success, LASIK has a proven track record of safe, effective, and lasting vision correction for many patients.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
PRK gently reshapes the surface of the eye to eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. During the procedure, the thin outer surface layer is removed, and a laser precisely reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to improve vision.
After PRK, it’s normal to experience mild discomfort and blurry vision for a few days—often described as a scratchy or gritty sensation. Healing typically progresses quickly. You’ll wear a clear bandage contact lens for protection, use prescription eye drops, and protective shields while your eye heals.
PRK offers excellent long-term visual results and is an especially good option for patients with thinner corneas or other eye characteristics that may make LASIK less suitable.
