At SkyVision Centers, our cornea specialist, Dr. Serels, offers expert care for even the most complex corneal conditions. We combine advanced diagnostics with cutting-edge surgical techniques to restore clarity, comfort, and function.

How Does the Cornea Affect Vision?
The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped part of the eye that sits in front of your iris. The curve of the cornea directs light into your eye, and in cases of perfect vision, focuses it directly on the retina.
There are many possible reasons that the cornea may become damaged or impacted by disease. When this occurs, it can prevent light from being focused on the retina, causing blurry or distorted vision. If corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses, cannot correct your vision, it may be time to explore corneal surgery.
Common Conditions We Address Through Corneal Surgery
Corneal problems can happen to anyone at any age. Depending on the extent of the cornea damage, we offer a variety of surgical and in-office treatments that can help improve your vision.
Dr. Serels treats a variety of corneal conditions, using his experience alongside our clinic’s diagnostic technology to develop a treatment plan tailored to your eyes.
While each case is unique, some of the common conditions we see at SkyVision Centers include individuals with keratoconus, Fuchs’ dystrophy, pterygium (surfer’s eye), and corneal scarring.
Click on each title to learn more about the condition and its symptoms, risk factors, and common surgical treatment options.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a condition that occurs when the cornea thins and warps, becoming cone-shaped and distorting vision. This may cause blurry vision or even seeing multiple images. There are procedures available that help to halt or slow worsening and restore vision.
Fuchs’ Dystrophy
Fuchs’ dystrophy is a genetic disease of the cornea that occurs when the inside lining of the cornea, called the endothelial cells, stops working properly. This causes the cornea to swell and vision to become cloudy or hazy.
Symptoms of Fuchs’ dystrophy include blurry or hazy vision, especially in the mornings, a sandy or gritty feeling in your eyes, and light sensitivity.
We provide the most advanced techniques for partial corneal transplants for individuals whose vision is impaired by Fuchs’ dystrophy by replacing just the layer of cells that aren’t working properly.
Pterygium
Pterygium is a benign but abnormal growth of tissue from the conjunctiva (the transparent tissue that covers the white of the eye) onto the cornea. It’s also called surfer’s eye, as it is associated with chronic exposure to the sun’s UV rays.
Pterygium can cause redness, irritation, and interfere with vision.
Surgery can remove the growth and improve symptoms of irritation or distorted vision.
Corneal Scarring
A scar on the cornea can impact your vision, causing blurry or hazy eyesight. There are many possible causes of corneal scarring, from trauma and injuries, such as corneal abrasions, to diseases such as corneal dystrophies, keratoconus, and more.
Depending on the severity of your corneal scar, we can correct vision through laser surgery to remove the scar tissue or a corneal transplant for more significant scarring.
Common Procedures We Offer at SkyVision Centers
During your consultation, we’ll discuss treatment options, give you insight into the healing process, and provide you with instructions for before and after any recommended procedures.
While each case is unique, here is a basic overview of some of the corneal surgery procedures Dr. Serels offers at SkyVision Centers.
Corneal Transplants
A corneal transplant involves replacing part or all of a patient’s cornea and replacing it with donor corneal tissue. A cornea transplant can treat several conditions, including thinning of the cornea, corneal scarring, swelling of the cornea, and/or complications caused by previous eye surgery.
A corneal transplant uses a healthy cornea from a human donor to replace a damaged cornea. All donated corneas are carefully tested to make sure they are healthy and safe to use.
Corneal transplants may replace only the inner layer (partial corneal transplant or “endothelial keratoplasty”), or the entire cornea (full-thickness corneal transplant or “penetrating keratoplasty”).
Pterygium Surgery
Pterygium is a benign but abnormal growth of tissue from the conjunctiva (the transparent tissue that covers the white of the eye) onto the adjacent cornea. Pterygium surgery is a procedure to remove the growth from the surface of the eye.
Corneal Cross-Linking
Corneal cross-linking is a procedure that helps to treat a structurally weak or warped cornea from keratoconus or ectasia by strengthening the bonds between corneal fibers in order to reduce further progression.
