Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens—like a foggy window—that blocks light and causes blurry or dim vision. While most cataracts develop with age, they can also result from eye disease, injury, poor nutrition, UV exposure, or certain medications.

Cataracts tend to develop slowly, starting with mild symptoms. But as they grow and thicken, they can lead to significant vision problems.

Early Stage Symptoms

Common cataract symptoms in early stages:

  • Gradual blurring of vision
  • Increased sensitivity to glare (from sunlight or headlights)
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Colors appearing faded or less vibrant

Late Stage Symptoms

Common cataract symptoms in late stages:

  • Significant vision loss
  • Double vision in the affected eye or eyes
  • Difficulty with everyday activities like reading & driving

Managing Cataracts: From Early to Late Stages

There are several ways to manage cataracts:

Glasses: In the early stages, eyeglasses may help improve vision by correcting for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. However, as the cataract progresses, glasses may become less effective.

Contact Lenses: Contact lenses can help improve vision in the early stages. However, they may not be suitable for everyone and may not be effective as the cataract worsens.

Cataract Surgery: Cataract surgery is the most effective treatment for cataracts. It involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens implant called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Cataract Surgery at SkyVision Centers

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective outpatient procedure. Dr. White uses modern surgical techniques and technology to deliver a comfortable and successful experience.

We offer various intraocular lens (IOL) options, from standard to innovative advanced function lenses, to meet your unique visual needs and lifestyle:

  • Basic IOLs: These standard IOLs can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Toric IOLs: Designed to correct astigmatism, a common eye condition that causes blurred vision.
  • Multifocal IOLs: These lenses can help you see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances, potentially reducing the need for glasses after surgery.
  • Expanded Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs: These lenses generally offer a wider range of clear vision for easier focus at various distances.

Cataract surgery is usually a quick and straightforward procedure, usually taking less than 15 minutes per eye. While cataracts often develop in both eyes simultaneously, surgeries are done one eye at a time to make recovery easier. This way, you can continue most of your daily activities while healing comfortably.

You’ll need to wear an eye patch for a short time and use eye drops as directed by your eye doctor. After the procedure, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

Most people experience significant improvement in their vision after cataract surgery. However, it may take a few weeks for their vision to stabilize fully.

Whether you’ll need glasses after cataract surgery depends on the IOL implanted and your vision needs. Some people see well without glasses, while others may need them for reading, driving, or other activities.
More advanced IOLs, like multifocal or EDOF lenses, can help reduce reliance on corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.

You should resume most normal activities within a few days after surgery. However, you should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for a week or so.
